Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd

What Jio offers

The new mobile operator, Reliance Jio, represents by far the biggest investment of its kind by an Indian company, as the oil products giant with a $41bn turnover bets its future on diversification. Mr. Ambani said “The era of paying for voice calls is ending. All voice calls for Jio customers will be absolutely free, Jio will put an end to voice call charges in India.”
With the Jio Welcome Offer, users get unlimited 4G data till December 31 and then the service will migrate to paid mode. With ‘Jio Welcome Offer’, users get unlimited 4G data access, unlimited 4G data access when connected to a Jio hotspot, unlimited 4G data at night and unlimited free voice calling. The idea with Jio 4G is to make voice calls irrelevant and push users towards using data for every need. Reliance ‘Jio Welcome Offer’ also entitles users access to a wide suite of Jio apps, which offers access to on-demand music, video, chat to name a few. Jio’s digital life includes following to its users:
  • Best 4G network with the lowest data rates globally
  • Instant Aadhaar card based activations
  • Free voice calls
  • Jio simple 4G Tariff Plans,No complex telecom charges

Bharti Airtel

India’s current market leader Airtel is facing a threat from Jio’s entry is now forced to extend its product line to retain its hold in the market. “myPlan Infinity” is the reply from Bharti Airtel to Jio. The plan Gives free voice calls and free subscription to Wynk app which give live streaming of music and movies. Their plan is here:
Airtel myPlan Infinity

myPlan Infinity offers free voice call and Wynk subscription.

Idea and Vodafone

As far as 4G’s concern at present Jio and Airtel are in face to face competition While, Idea and Vodafone are vulnerable to the giants as they have placed 4G in just 10 and 9 circles respectively. Citi Research analysts said “Idea’s initial reluctance on 4G leaves it exposed not only to Jio but also Bharti. Not only is its spectrum inferior to Bharti (3G and LTE) and Jio (LTE), but we believe its stretched balance sheet leaves little room to meaningfully increase capex to offset the spectrum disadvantage”. Idea Cellular and Vodafone India will have no choice but to bid aggressively for 4G data airwaves, if they are to compete with Jio, in the upcoming auctions scheduled to take place next month.

State-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL)  has announced that it will soon launch a promotional unlimited wireline broadband plan that effectively translates into less than Re 1 per GB download cost for subscribers if they use up to 300GB data in a month. Attempting to take Reliance Jio’s 4G offer of Rs 50 per GB head-on, BSNL is looking to hook new customers to its wireline broadband offering. The telecom operator is planning to join the 4G bandwagon by launching commercial high-speed services in 14 circles where it possesses 20 MHz liberalised BWA spectrum in 2500 MHz band. BSNL is also planning to install 3700 Wi-Fi hotspots during 2016-17. It has already installed 2526 Wi-Fi hotspots to provide wireless internet services.

With the entry of Jio in to Indian telecom market every telecom industry is facing threat to survive but the ultimate benefit is received by the customers. This internet revolution brings a leverage for the country’s development which is not limited to academics and education. Each and every student are real benefices of this Telco war. I personally like to Thank Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd, for initiating such healthy competition with a high risk in his investments.
